i have lived in underground homes and they are very strong and pretty inexpensive to build - essentially all concrete and glass. Would that be a consideration?
I lived in one in northern VA so it was fairly humid. I have a builder in TN who is considered the best in the country. They stay pretty much the same temperature-wise. Here is the link to the builder.
http://www.earthshelteredhousing.com/ - underground homes. Underground homes in the South to me is the only way to go - it helps so much in keeping it cool. Wish I had had one on my 15 acre farm in SC when I lived there!
I have found a community that the HQ is based in The Ozarks in Arkansas and you can get land for free and there are about 15 engineers who can help build a house. I'm going there in a few weeks to check it out. I can get 10 acres to do my side business of buying/selling horses and the head honcho has owned horses for many years and said if I would take care of his, it would be free for me. You need to grow a garden for yourself and another to give food to homeless/unemployed. I found a great place in TN but it's going to be a problem finding a job nearby, otherwise it would be my choice. I work for PepsiCo with the best benefits in the world, and if I do the Arkansas community, I can get a job with Pepsi about 10 miles away, so I can't beat that.
